Although ISAK is an international school with students from all corners of the world, our connection with the local community is a big part of who we are! At ISAK, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese culture and get to know the residents of Karuizawa through volunteer and club activities, as well as local events. In fact, participation in the summer “obon” festival is one of the highlights of Orientation Week. From basketball with middle school students to participation in a traditional tea ceremony, ISAK gives you the chance to learn more about Japan and the wonderful people who live here.
Additionally, you can spend weekends exploring the area with teachers and classmates. Cherry-blossom viewing at a nearby castle and a trip to the Karuizawa Ice Park for a curling lesson are just a small sample of the options available for weekend outings.
Proud of Our Beautiful Environment
ISAK is located in Karuizawa, one of Japan’s most well-known mountain resort areas, and students have many opportunities to enjoy our beautiful surroundings. In fact, the ISAK campus was designed to highlight our special environment, with views of the surrounding woods from classrooms and residences.
At ISAK, you can experience the four seasons of Japan, including the dramatic colors of the leaves in autumn and the peaceful snow of winter. Throughout the year, we plan events that let you enjoy Karuizawa’s abundant nature, including hiking and skiing. You will get to experience cherry blossom “snow” and maybe even get a glimpse of the area’s snow monkeys taking a dip in a natural hot springs!
