One of the most frequent compliments we receive from ISAK visitors is how much they enjoy the clean, modern look of our campus facilities, as well as the open and friendly feel. Following Japanese architectural principals, ISAK facilities have been constructed to create a sense of harmony with the beautiful forested environment that makes Karuizawa so special.
Surrounded by woods and a short walk from a beautiful view of Mt. Asama, the ISAK buildings harmonize with the surrounding landscape, creating an inspiring environment for living and learning. Classrooms have been designed with large windows and high ceilings to emphasize the beauty of the changing seasons, while brightening the interior with natural sunlight. Many students say they feel more creative, inspired and energized by the natural light!
Careful consideration has been put into the environmental aspects of campus buildings. Thoughtfully, each building serves a variety of purposes, minimizing the campus’s overall footprint. Buildings also feature solar panels and eco-friendly bamboo flooring.
ISAK’s residential buildings are rows of connected units known as Houses, each with its own door to the outside. Each House is home to 12 to 18 ISAK students from around the world. The residences feature bamboo floors and large windows that bathe the rooms in natural light.
In addition to 2 and 4 person bedrooms, each House contains a kitchenette along with a large communal living room with floor to ceiling windows and comfortable, modern furniture. All houses also include free laundry facilities and private toilet and shower facilities.
Additionally, ISAK’s Head of School and most faculty members live right on campus, providing opportunities for interaction between students and faculty throughout the day, as well as creating a strong sense of family among everyone in our community.
Gymnasium and Sports Field
ISAK’s beautiful gymnasium includes a full basketball court, and provides indoor space where students can enjoy sports and other physical activity throughout the year.
When the weather permits (most of the school year), students can also use our natural-grass sports field and surrounding grounds for outdoor recreation, including trail running.
Additionally, public facilities in Karuizawa are available to students and faculty. Karuizawa is a year-round destination for outdoor activities and the local amenities include swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses, hiking trails, a ski slope and a rink for ice skating and curling that was built at the time of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.
Kamiyama Academic Center
The Kamiyama Academic Center, completed in July 2016, is the newest addition to the ISAK campus. This state of the art, light-filled building includes classrooms, a library/information center, study areas, meeting rooms, and the main school office. KAC has already become one of the most popular places to study on campus, and it is easy to understand why! Comfy furniture and cozy meeting spaces make this the perfect place to open a book (or a computer) and get to work.
The expansion project was designed by Coelacanth and Associates, a leader in the field of educational institution design. The architects at Coelecanth and Associates have gone to extraordinary lengths to enhance residential life for our entire community. Their design process even included spending several nights as guests in our residences to better understand life at ISAK. Read more about the design process for ISAK’s new buildings here.
